The York Street Interchange is a £165m DRD / Transport NI project to connect and complete Belfast’s urban motorway. Whilst the motorway is now viewed as a destructive mistake for the city, the interchange if implemented as an urban design opportunity could at least begin to deal with the 50 years of blight it caused in inner north of the city.

Ken Sterrett and Mark Hackett have been working since 2010 to demonstrate urban regeneration possibilities through the Interchange and to affect change with the engineering design. Mark sat on the Strategic Advisory Group during 2015, and later represented neighbourhood and urban concerns at the Public Inquiry.

In the publicly owned sites left after the interchange is complete could accommodate one million square feet of mixed use development, and we have demonstrated how, if carefully planned with the engineering works, this could resolve and ameliorate many negative affects of the infrastructure.
